Miami, 1991. When he can no longer ignore his bloodthirsty urges, young Dexter Morgan must learn to channel his inner darkness as he progresses from student to vengeful serial killer under the tutelage of his father, Harry. Dexter has the same birthday as Michael S. Hall, February 1, 1971. In episode ​4, the Blockbuster employee that Deb and her friend meet wears a dark blue short-sleeved shirt as part of his uniform. In 1991, employees wore blue shirts with long sleeves. Shirts with short sleeves began to be worn only 4-5 years later. Next comes Dexter: Rebirth (2025). “Dexter: Original Sin” takes a bold risk, recalls the formative years of Dexter Morgan and offers a new look at his dark companion. While some prequels stumble under the weight of established canon, Original Sin largely succeeds in enriching Dexter’s mythology while creating a compelling stand-alone story. One of the strongest points of the series is its cast. Patrick Gibson, although at first it was a questionable choice, turned into the role of young Dexter and captured the character’s signature combination of social awkwardness and frighteningly calculated violence. Molly Brown shines as Deb, bringing a fiery spirit and vulnerability to the younger version of the character that resonates deeply. The supporting cast, including Alex Shimizu as Masuki and James Martinez as Batista, also deliver strong performances and effectively convey the essence of their original counterparts. However, Christian Slater seems to be somewhat miscast as Harry and tries his best to fully embody the character’s internal conflicts. The series skilfully combines familiar elements of the original “Dexter”, including iconic musical numbers and visual motifs, while opening new horizons. The plot surrounding Harry’s dead son makes Dexter’s origin story even more complicated, although it sometimes becomes melodramatic. The central mystery of Dexter’s current predicament in Iron Lake creates a compelling thread and sustains tension throughout the season. “Original sin” is not without its shortcomings. The pacing can be uneven, with some episodes feeling rushed and others lingering. The excessive reliance on licensed music sometimes clashes with the show’s darker themes. And although the computer graphics as a whole have improved compared to the first episode, there are still noticeable problems with visual effects in some walls. Despite these flaws, Dexter: Original Sin is a worthy addition to the Dexter universe. It’s a darkly entertaining exploration of Dexter’s past, offering a fresh look at his transformation into the Bay Harbor Butcher. While “Original Sin” may not satisfy all fans, especially those who were disappointed by “New Blood”, it offers enough exciting moments, strong actors and intriguing twists to keep the audience in suspense until the bloody finale.
